Troop 5 started as a troop in 1926 and has been growing strong ever since. A ministry of the Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, we meet every Monday evening at 7pm in the Christian Life Center (CLC) of the church building. We have more than 80 Scouts and 40 Leaders registered with the BSA, and can always use more; the more the merrier.
Scouts run the program; Lord Baden-Powell – the founder of scouting in 1910 – developed the Patrol Method. This allows the Scouts to lead the troop as they see fit. Adults take on the role of advisors, and safety monitors. The Senior Patrol Leader is truly in charge of the troop, and he has his leadership Team, the Patrol Leaders Council, to ensure what he decides as an activity is what a majority of the members of the troop want to do. Scouts, each and every one of them, have a say in what the troop does, and does not do.
Monday night meetings consist of some form of training, and a game. There are other activities during the two hours and the time goes by fast. If everything is not completed, no one really worries too much about it; unless it's the planning of the menu for a campout the next weekend. That IS important!
Troop 5 plans for at least one campout each month. The most popular campout in the troop is by-far our annual excursion to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is a fun, relaxing, and restful weekend….RIGHT! There is a lot to do there, and the Scouts tend to want to do it all. But it is a LOT of fun for all – including the Adults.
Adult leadership in Troop 5 is given by the team of Assistant Scoutmasters. Every ASM is trained for their position, and nearly all of them have completed Wood Badge, and received their beads, or are very close.
We can’t forget to mention the Troop Committee. This committee consists of parents who take a genuine interest in their son’s activity, and want to help in any way they can. The Troop Committee is responsible for conducting the monthly Board of Review, which is the last step in any rank advancement for the Scouts. The committee members have other responsibilities to enhance the program, which include Equipment Manager, Outdoor Coordinator, Transportation Coordinator, Summer Camp Coordinator, and several more. The Troop Committee is led by the Committee Chair whose role is to organize the committee to see that all functions are delegated, coordinated, and completed.
At any event, meeting, activity, or campout all parents are always invited, and encouraged, to attend. If a parent would like to camp with the troop, and they do not have any experience camping, the leaders can help and teach you what to do to make your experience fun and exciting.
If you have questions about the Troop, or would like to know more; all you need to do is attend a meeting. Your questions will be answered. You can also contact the troop with questions at the email address of
